The Statue of Liberty is a landmark that New York believed was their's because it was in their water. When truly the Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey's water which means it should belong to New Jersey. As a whole though it belongs to the United States and doesn't belong to any state but, New York used to make money off it until they closed it. They closed it that way there would not be another event like September 11, 2001.

In contrary to the above answer, the Statue of Liberty belongs to New Jersey. It is in New Jersey's waters. The address of said statue is 1 Communipaw Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07305. It is paid for by Jersey City and powered by it as well. The statue was originally a gift from an architect, who made two other statues, of Bayonne, France to the residents of, Bayonne, NJ. The statue does not belong to New York, and it was never intended to belong to it. People have a false misconception because it appears on the license plate of New York State. The point of Lady Liberty looking away from NJ is to show that she is guiding us, not looking at NYC.

Actually on the contrary the address is Liberty Island New York, NY 10004 and its in New York Harbor even look on Google Maps or any other map, they all say the same thing: New York Not, New Jersey. But in the question who owns it , it would be the Government, not one singular state

Back in the 70's when i was a kid , growing up in Jersey City , NJ i had a map and it did bear the address 1 Communipaw Ave. Jersey City, NJ . Communipaw ave. runs straight through Jersey City in the direction of the Statue of Liberty. It is nowhere near New York when looking at a map. It is in fact powered by New Jersey and it's maintenance facility is in Jersey City. Greedy New York back in the early 90's fought to get the statue of liberty in their court as to suck in the tax money from tourism. And guess what...New York won that case. Only then did the address change to a New York address. Also, Look at Staten Island on a map, tell me that does not belong to New Jersey Geographically.

Regardless though, as in just about everything, until The Soprano's New Jersey had nothing to identify itself, so it had to try and steal it's identity from New York. This is evident in so many ways such as convincing the NY Giants, NY Jets and NY Nets (at least the Nets regained their senses and returned to NY) to come and play there. So the Statue or Liberty, Ellis Island and even Staten Island are just more plots of New Jersians trying to find plausibility for existence in the shadow of New York City. I mean come on, do you really believe immigrants traveled to the new world to come to New Jersey.
