Two were made at almost the same time Saulk is credited with the one we used first. We certainly had issues at first and some contracted polio that would not have otherwise. It was still overall a great success story, savings millions over the years.

The first known vaccine was for small pox. Dr. Edward Jenner noticed that having had cow pox protected people from getting small pox. (Cow pox is a similar disease to small pox, but much less virulent.) He used that knowledge to develop the first vaccine. Other famous people associated with vaccinations are Drs. Salk and Sabin who develop different types of vaccinations for polio in the 1950's.

The story of vaccines did not begin with Edward Jenner’s use of material from cowpox for protection against smallpox. The Chinese employed smallpox inoculation as early as 1000 CE.
Louis Pasteur produced the first laboratory-developed vaccine for chicken cholera.
