It isn't known for sure who built the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is believed that the first builder was Gerardo di Gerardo, or a man named Diotisalvi. Giovanni di Simone was the main figure in completing the tower, under the direction of Giovanni Pisano

The Tower was originally built to be a Bell Tower for the Catholic Church. There were many people who contributed to the design and funding of the project. No one specific individual is credited.

The Tower was NOT supposed to lean. The lean began shortly after construction due to a poor soil for the foundation. It would have fallen over by now, except for stabilization efforts early in the 20th century, and later.

it has been designed by Bonanno Pisano and Guglielmo of Innsbruck, Austria or Diotisalvi. but the architecter is unknown.
