Actually the majority of societies in the world practice polygamy, more so in ancient times than in modern. The truth is that monogamy (having only one wife) is actually something fairly modern, seeming to originate from Europe, particularly the Romans/Roman Catholic Church.
In earlier times, the Jews, the Celts, many Asian cultures, many Arican cultures, all Middle-eastern Cultures, many Native Americans, and even Christians practiced polygamy.
Many of these cultures still do practice these things today and in cultures where it is not accepted, there are many who live it in private. In America there are a number of people who live it as a religious belief, following the examples of the Patriarchs of the Bible. (Not the individuals who do it for immoral reasons.) Most of these people stem from the LDS Church, which has given up the practice in recent times due to persecution from the Government.
