In November 1863, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln gave the now famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

He began by referring to the 1776 Declaration of Independence, saying: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

He continued by saying that the task of the current generation was to honour the dead by showing "increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion…and that we here highly resolve…that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
