These are times that try men's souls".
Thomas Paine, author of Common Sense.
Thomas Paine wrote those words in a pamphlet called The Crisis. Paine wrote several pamphlets with that title, but these words were in the first one. The reason was that during the winter George Washington spent at Valley Forge, his troops and the colonists at large began to weary of the war and many wanted to stop it. He mainly wrote it for the troops though, many of whom were on the verge of deserting, leaving the army as their enlistments ran out or just plain mutineering. Paine's work convinced many soldiers and civilians to keep on fighting instead of giving up even though the times were so hard that they did try mens' souls.
These is used when you have several, as in "These sentences are helpful." These are the times that try men's souls. I came to these woods to be alone.
