'La Malinche' [c. 1496 - c. 1505?/c. 1529?/c. 1550?] was the translator for Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro [1485 - 2xii1547] in the latter's victories over the Aztec Empire of Mexico. Her real name is unknown. She variously was known in the historical record as 'Malintzin' and 'Malinalli'. As part of their personal relationship and professional interaction, she was required by her lover and boss to be baptized. Her baptismal name was Doña Marina.

Cortez had three translators I can find:

one was named Melchanejo, a native of the Yucatan peninsula who had been brought back by Grijalva and met with Cortez while in Cuba.

another was a Spaniard named Jeronimo De Aguilar, who had been shipwrecked on the peninsual in 1512 and had learned some Mayan and taken a wife in his time there.

the most famous translator was "Maria/Marina", a Maya who had been taken captive by the Aztecs and had learned Nahuatl while in captivity.

Cortez most often translated through Jeronimo de Aguilar, who in turn translated through Maria, leadng me to believe Melchanejevo may have been a poor translator or died or left early in the expedition

Malinali (1501 - 1529) qualifies as such. She was one of 20 slaves given to Hernan Cortes as a gift by the Tabasco chieftain inn 1519. She became his interpreter, mistress and bore him a son, Martin (1523 - 1595), who would become one of the first mestizos in Mexico.
