Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2 1950 New Haven Conn. - Feb. 4 1983) was a singer and drummer with the American pop group, Carpenters, along with her brother Richard Lynn Carpenter. She was the first well-known woman drummer and the first famous person to die from anorexia nervosa. It was Ms. Carpenter's death from anorexia nervosa that made eating disorders world famous in the 1980's. Prior to 1983 only a few doctors had ever heard of anorexia or bulimia. Ms. Carpenter is considered to be one of the best singers of all time.
