i think below answer is wrong.they were brothers..... Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa was a true 19th century Saint of the highest order.

Born - (February 18th, 1836 in Kamarpukar, West Bengal, India)

Died - (August 16th, 1886 at the Garden House in Cossipore, India)

At birth he was named Gadadhar Chattopadhyay, later abbreviated to Gadai Chattujjay.

From early childhood Gadadhar was prone to spiritual reverie and going into mystic states of trance.

At 16 Gadadhar travelled to calcutta to assist his elder brother, Ramkumar, in his duties as a priest, serving a new large temple complex in the nearby village of Dakshineswar. His brother Priest of the temple of Kali and Gadadhar appointed to one of the smaller shrines.

When Ramkumar fell ill and died in 1856, Gadadhar assumed the role of priest to the Divine Mother in the main temple.

Rani Rasmani, the founder of the temple passed away in 1861.

After her death her son-in-law Mathur became sole executor of the estate and took care of Gadadhar every needs.

As time progressed, Gadadhar's behaviour became more and more eccentric than normal!!!

His parents sought to get him married thinking that his madness was mental instability resulting from celibacy! Gadadhar agreed to marry a young girl whom he saw in his meditations - her name was Sarada Devi

Around this time a woman Saint called Bhairavi Brahmaniappeared and announced that his madness was spiritual madness rather than any form of mental instability or ill-health. She became one of the first of several Gurus who helped Gadadhar attain deeper states of meditation and realization of God. Bhairavi declaired this young yogi an Avatar and even conviened a group of respected religious authorities to examine his symptoms in the light of their scripturial works. They all concluded his apparently eccentric behaviour as divine madness as exhibited by other saints such as Chaitanya ( a 15th century Bengali Saint).

Bhairavi stayed with Gadadhar for sometime teaching him further yogic and tantric meditation techniques.

Later, a Master named Totapuri came to Gadadhar and initiated him into Advaita Vedanta - the science of Oneness and stayed to teach and help him achieve Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

Gadadhar achieved in one sitting the elevated state of Cosmic Consciousness (something which had taken Totapuri over 40 years of hard and strenous meditation to achieve!)

Totapuri, an orthodox type of monk never normally stayed at any one place for more than three days but nevertheless stayed at Dakshineswar for 11 months to be in the company of his most unusual disciple!!!

From that day on Totapuri called him RamaKrishna Paramahansa.

Ramakrishna, not without a sense of humour, referred to his beloved Guru as 'Nangta' - The Unclad One!!!

Ramakrishna was asked by the Divine Mother not to dwell in Brahmic Consciousness (Sahasrara Chakra) too deeply but to remain in Bhavamukha (Ajna Chakra) at the threshold of the Infinte and the Finite so as to remain on earth to fulfill his mission.

It is said that after the departure of Totapuri, Ramakrishna stayed in Cosmic Consciousness for six months at a stretch!!!

This is unique in the world for the ordinary yogi staying in this state normally gives up his body in about 21 days ( 3 weeks)!!!

After this time Ramakrishna started to aquire and teach many devotees and disciples including:

Mahendranath Gupta (better known as 'M') - who arrived at Dakshineswar in 1882 was immediately recognised by Ramakrishna as one of his 'marked' disciples. Mahenranath recorded in Bengali what later became the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna - introducing the teachings and life of his great master.

Purna -

Narendra (Swami Vivekananda)

Gangadhar

Kailprasad

Subodh

Gopal Ma

And many more!!!

Ramakrishna's teaching is based on realizing God through yoga.

Much could be written but so little space for o
