Richard Nixon (January 9, 1913 - April 22, 1994) was the 37th President of the United States, in office from 1969 to 1974. He served as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961, the only person to be elected twice to both the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. A member of the Republican Party, he was the only President to resign from office because he was involved in a conspiracy to cover-up illegal espionage and sabotage of Democratic Presidential candidate George McGovern's campaign in 1972. He reestablished diplomatic relations with China.

Richard Milhous Nixon's resignation in 1974 made him the first United States president to resign. From 1972 until his resignation, a mound of evidence was brought forward by both media and Senate investigation committees showing that he had known about a break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters and had made every effort to cover it up. He had no other alternative than to resign to avoid an impeachment trial for obstruction of justice.

There are many reasons, they all depend on how you look at his presidency. 99% of Americans know Nixon for one thing: impeachment. In fact, Nixon was never impeached. On a side note: President Clinton WAS impeached. To be impeached means to have charges officially filed against you and taken to trial by the US Congress while serving as President of the United States. Nixon resigned and was pardoned of any and all possible offenses before he could be impeached. This is another thing that makes Nixon important: he was the 1st (and still only) President to resign his position. What most Americans don't realize, though, is that he actually did some important things in his capacity as President. Now, we could get into a HUGE and LONG debate as to whether this was a good or bad thing, but that's not the point, it still was a very important event in US history.
