He was the last Roman emperor of the Western Empire. At the time of his reign, the Roman Empire had split into an Eastern and Western empire. The Eastern Empire went on to become the Byzantine Empire but the Western portion was an "empire" in name only whose territory ended at the city walls. Romulus Augustus took the names of the mythical founder of Rome, Romulus, and the first emperor, Augustus, in a vain attempt to resurrect Rome's former glory. It didn't work. He was deposed by the barbarians who had invaded Italy, after which he faded from history.

Romulus Augustus (Augustulus was a nickname) was deposed by Odoacer, a barbarian and a military commander of troops allied with the Romans. He led a rebellion of Germanic troops who fought for the Romans and wanted to be given land in Italy and made himself king of Italy. Romulus Augustus was the fifteen-year-old son of Orestes, a general who usurped the throne held by Julius Nepos. Orestes proclaimed his son as a puppet emperor. His reign lasted only eleven months. His deposition is conventionally given as the end of the western part of the Roman Empire.

Romulus Augustus was the last emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire. He was a fifteen year old puppet emperor who was installed by his father, Orestes, who had deposed the previous emperor and held the real power, but could not become an emperor because he was not a roman citizen. He was deposed after ten months in 476. Historian use this date as the conventional date for the fall of he western part of the roman empire.
