Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885) was the 18th president of the US and the commander of the Union army that won the Civil War. Grant was born in Point Pleasant , Ohio and grew up in Georgetown, Ohio where you can still visit his boyhood home. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1843 and began an army career served in the Mexican . He married Julia Boggs Dent in 1848 soon after the war ended He quit the army in 1854 and took charge of his father-in-law's farm near St. Louis and later moved to Galena , Ill . to work in his father's leather business. After the Civil War began. he went back into the army and had a series of successes that resulted in promotions until eventually Grant was in command of the entire Union army and remained so until the war ended. After the war, there was little opposition to his nomination for President in 1968 and he went on to win two terms as president. His administration was marred by corruption in his cabinet. After he left office in 1877, he took a long world tour and retired to upstate New York where he died from cancer in 1885 soon after completing his memoirs.

A simple man who was good at simplifying problems.

He was suited to a long war of attrition, remarkably calm under fire, a good chooser of Generals, able to take hard decisions and stick to them. (For example, his decision to end prisoner-exchange led to unspeakable sufferings in the prison-camps, but it undoubtedly shortened the war.)

In personal life, he was surprisingly modest and unassuming - when the crowd started cheering on his arrival in Washington, he didn't know who they were cheering at. He was also a devoted family man, who actually refused the invitation to that certain evening at the theatre with the Lincolns because he wanted to visit his son at college.

As US President, he was undoubtedly out of his depth, though the disgraceful corruption in Washington was none of his doing. Bankrupt and dying, he desperately wrote his memoirs to give his family something to live on after he was dead. The book was a remarkable piece of work from a man who looked and sounded nothing like an author.
