If there had been a mathematician he would have been a monk or priest. They were the only people with learning.

___

Clergy were not the only people with learning in medieval society. There were a lot of educated and inquisitive scholars throughout Europe, China and what we now call the Middle East. Math was a popular subject in the middle ages. New theories were being developed at the Universities all through the medieval period. The groundwork for advanced ideas in calculus, trig, algebra were being laid down during this time.

One of the best known mathematicians in the Middle Ages was Leonardo Pisano Bogollo, (c. 1170 - c. 1250) who is still know for the Fibonacci sequence.

He was employed by the Fredrick the II the Holy Roman Emperor

John of London (@ 1260)was another mathematician. He was involved in designing the first astrolabes.

Richard Swineshead wrote the Book of Calculations in 1350

William Heytesbury (a. 1313 - 1372/1373), known as one of Oxford calculators. He was the Chancellor of Oxford.

Richard of Wallingford (1292-1336) who studied astronomy. His interests in time and astronomy led him to develop methods of predicting eclipses, planetary longtitudes.

There were numerous Chinese and Islamic scholars who were mathematicians as well. Too many to list in this space.
