People from all over the world were drawn to the Australian gold rush. Naturally, tens of thousands of Australians downed their tools or left their farms to travel to the goldfields. As well, people came from Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and Asia (especially China).
Which one? There were multiple gold rushes. In the Klondike gold rush, or Yukon gold rush, which was in Alaska in the late 19th century, caused a big gold-oriented Immigration in the United States. They came from all over the United States to cities in Washington mostly where they stocked up on supplies. The natives in Canada at that time played a big role because they were the ones that told the immigrants that the best way to get to the gold was by dogsled. The immigrants traveled over many treacherous miles of snow and ice by dogsled, in which the dogs, which were mostly huskies, lived in poor conditions. They passed through many owners until they finally died on the trails.
The California gold rush was obviously in California, around 1849. That's where the term, "Miner Forty-Niners," comes form. they used the Oregon Trail until they turned off and headed for California instead of the Willamette Valley.

Alchemy played virtually no role in the Gold Rushes which took place in the American continent. The majority of the Gold Rush took place after alchemy had been widely discredited, in favor of the more modern chemistry. In any case, the purpose of the Gold Rush was to find gold; whereas the goal of many alchemists was to create it, rather than dig it up.
