President Dwight David Eisenhower appointed the first "Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs" ( formal title for 'National Security Advisor'), Robert C. Cutler(23Mar1953 - 2Apr1955). He was succeeded by Dillon Andersonand then former (also, very first) Deputy Director CIA, William Harding Jackson, before Cutler served a second-term as the country's 4th National Security Advisor (7Jan1957 - 24Jun1959) - all under Eisenhower. Cutler was then succeed by Gordon Gray.

The current (2011) National Security Advisor is Tom Donilon.
