Barabas. His actual name in Aramaic is Bar-ABBA meaning "Son of the Father", which is interesting because they had to choose between a man who was just called "Son of the Father" or the TRUE son of the Father.

A:According to the gospels, Pontius Pilate offered the mob the option of freeing a criminal named Barabbas or Jesus, thereby placing the primary responsibility for Jesus' death at the feet of the Jews.

Earl Doherty points out that this is an option no governor of Judea would ever have offered, and there is no record of such a Roman policy anywhere. John Shelby Spong concurs, saying that in his research, he has been able to find no evidence that there was a custom among the Jews of releasing a prisoner at the time of the Passover. In the face of this evidence, it must be considered that Barabbas may have been an allegory created by the author of Mark's Gospel. Spong suggests the original crucifixion story could have been related to the Yom Kippur tradition. One lamb or goat (Jesus) was killed for our sins and one had the sins of the people symbolically transferred to him, after which he was chased away (Barabbas).

Richard Carrier points out that Barabbas means "son of the father" and says that it is an obvious pun on Christ himself. The Jews chose the wrong "son of the father", one who represents the Old Covenant, as well as the scapegoat (the lamb) sent off, bearing the people's sins into the wilderness, while its twin is sacrificed.

Why was Jesus released at Passover instead of Barabbas?

Every year one prisoner would be released, but you know that. The prisoner was chosen based on the will of the people, and the people called for Barabbas to be released (Matt. 27:21-22, Mark 15:9-11, John 18:39-40). If you want to know why they wanted Barabbas out instead of Jesus, only they and God know.

Who was the prisoner released instead of Jesus?

A:At the trial of Jesus, Pontius Pilate is said to have offered to free one of his two prisoners as a gift to the Jews for the Passover. The Jews chose to free Barabbas. Barabbas means 'Son of the Father' in Aramaic, so it has been suggested that this episode was a play on words. The Jews, in releasing Barabbas instead of Jesus, had released the wrongSon of the Father.
