Sibghatullah Mojaddedi was the President of the Islamic State of Afghanistan from April 28 to June 28.

Burhanuddin Rabbani was the President of the Islamic State of Afghanistan after June 28.

Dr. Mohammad Najibullah Ahmadzai was the President of the Republic of Afghanistan from 1987 September 30 to 1992 April 16. He eventually resigned as the civil war was lost, after Russia withdrew its support earlier that year.

Abdul Rahim Hatif was the Vice President of the Republic of Afghanistan, and became the acting President for 13 days before fleeing into exile as the republic collapsed.

Sibghatullah Mojaddedi was the President of the Islamic State of Afghanistan as the Chair of the Islamic Council tasked with creating a post-Russian state.

Burhanuddin Rabbani was the President of the Islamic State of Afghanistan from 1992 June 28 until 1996 September 27 when the Taliban captured Kabul. He would later become the president again briefly in 2001. Rabbani led strong opposition to President Karzai. He was assassinated by a suicide bomber on 2011 September 20.
