Two years before McCutcheon, Cowboy running back Robert Newhouse became the first African-American to attempt a pass in a Super Bowl when he threw a 29-yard TD pass to Golden Richards against Denver with just under 8 minutes remaining in Super Bowl XII (the first Super Bowl played in a dome).

The only African-American head coaches to lose in Super Bowl competition were Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears (Super Bowl XLI), Jim Caldwell of the Indianapolis Colts (Super Bowl XLIV) and Mike Tomlin (Super Bowl XLV). Smith's Bears lost to the Colts team coached by Tony Dungy, the first African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl. Tomlin's first Super Bowl appearance as a head coach was a victorious one. His Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23.
