It is a misnomer to think that no one knew Lake Erie was there except for White Explorers. The fact is that Native Americans (Indians) knew about the Lake for many generations. Native Americans frequently traveled between New York and Canada, and Ohio and Canada (and other places on both sides) during hunting. Native Americans showed explorers most things that Whites then claimed to have "discovered".

Among European explorers, French explorer Louis Joliet "discovered" Lake Erie in 1669.
