Marine Lance Corporal Jose Gutierrez 22 Lomita, California Killed in action in southern Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California. Died on March 21, 2003. He was the first casualty of war in Iraq, it was later found that he was killed not by enemy fire but friendly fire.
