The sixth king of Rome, Servius Tullius (reigned 578-535 BC) effected the first major reform of the Roman army. It is thought that introduced the new and revolutionary military formation which had been invented in Greece: the hoplite phalanx. The hoplites were heavy infantrymen who wore a bronze armour and helmet and used a round shield. They were a heavy infantry which fought in a tight formation (phalanx) with up to eight lines of men. Servius Tullius introduced the census, which was aimed at finding out the number of men of military age (17-46) and to assess the value of their property. The richer peasants were to join the heavy infantry and the poorer ones joined the supporting light infantry of skirmishes. He also introduced a centralised ley where soldiers were recruited directly by the state. Finally he created the Assembly of the Soldiers (comitia centuriata).
