After being refused by Dronacharya, Karna sought his brother Shona's help. But according to Indian culture, to learn an art you must have a guru (teacher), so Karna appointed the sun god as his guru, learned to wield his weapons during the day by gathering information about the various ayudhas (weapons) and practiced with them after sundown.

But, Karna wanted to learn all the advanced skills of Archery including the use of divine weapons. After being refused by Dronacharya, Karna decided to learn from Parashurama, Dronacharya's own guru, who was known to teach only Brahmins. He appeared before Parashurama as a Brahmin and requested that he be taken on as his student. Parashurama accepted him and trained him to such a point that he declared Karna to be equal to himself in the art of warfare and archery.

Yes. He was probably the greatest warrior who fought in the Mahabharata War. He was considered to be more talented than Arjuna was considered the best. However, because he was on the wrong side of the war and since good always defeats evil, he lost. Lord Krishna, who was with the Pandavas was instrumental in defeating Karna.

Karna had taken admission to learn weaponry with Guru Parashurama. Karna had not disclosed that he was a warrior. Parashurama once understands that Karna was a warrior and becomes angry and curses Karna that he would forget the mantras he taught and his chariot gets stuck in battle ground, when he needed them most during a battle. Who were the top ten warriors of Mahabharata war?

Most us give the ranking on the basis of what is shown in TV serials and not on the basis of Mahabharata scripture. On the basis of details of war the top 10 warriors of Mahabharata war(excluding Krishna) should be like this : 1.Arjuna- Arjuna completely defeated everyone including Karna in Virat yudh. He had an upper hand over Bhishma in Mahabharata war. He successfully checked his advance and was able to cut down his bow twice. It is evident in Mahabharata that that Arjuna do not want to kill either Bhishma or Drona because he loved them. Arjuna defeated Karna twice before their final encounter. Arjuna defeated Karna before killing Jayadratha. Karna was not able to save Jaydratha from Arjuna. 2.Bhishma- Bhishma was second only to Arjuna and the strongest warrior of kaurava side. No one except Arjuna was a match for him in that war. 3. Drona- Drona was tremendous in Mahabharata war. He was the master of many devastating weapons. Though he could not defeat Abhimanyu on 13th day of war. Satyaki and Bhima defeated him on 14th day of war. He could not stop their advance. 4. Satyaki- Satyaki was an excellent Yadava warrior and next only to Arjuna in Pandava army. He defeated everyone except Bhishma in Kaurava side. On 14th day he vanquished both Drona and Karna. He even defeated Ashvatthaman at one occasion. He checked Bhishma, when no one was able to stand in front of him. 5. Abhimanyu was prolific on 13th day of war. He defeated every one including Karna that day. 6. Bhima- Bhima was an all rounder. He was not only a top mace fighter, But a excellent archer as well. He vanquished Drona on 14th day of war. He defeated Karna at 4 times that day and Karna defeated him at last when he had no weapon left. He was unmatched in physical might. Karna did not accept his challenge for wrestling match on 14th day. 7. Karna - Karna also one of the top warriors. He had many divyastras. He was excellent on his final encounter with Arjuna. 8. Ashvatthaman - Ashvatthaman was an excellent warrior. He had got many dangerous weapons from his father, Drona. 9. Ghatotkacha- Ghatotkacha was very powerful. He was devastating for Kaurava army on 16th day. Karna had to use ''Shakti" astra against him. 10. Yudhishthira - Yudhishthira was not an ordinary warrior as shown in TV serial. He defeated mighty Duryodhana twice. He was able to defeat Shalya, one of the top 6 warriors of Kaurava side. He also vanquished Shrutayush, a mighty warrior. He successfully saved him from Drona on 15th day of war. He was able to cut down Drona's bow twice. He even gave a good fight to Karna before Karna could defeat him. He was able to cut down Karna's bow once and strikes Karna fatally with an powerful arrow. Karna fainted, but soon recovered from his swoon and defeated Yudhishthira.
