Answer:

Chinese invented the printing press.

Answer:

Actually, the Chinese did invent printing and movable type, but not the printing press. They did not use printing presses until after the European presses were introduced in the 19th century, along with new methods of casting type.

The earliest printing was done by inking a woodblock, putting paper against it, and applying pressure. The pressure was put on by rubbing the back of the paper with a tool with a smooth, slightly rounded surface, like the bottom of a spoon, and a spoon can actually be used for the purpose.

There is no record of the invention of the printing press. The press used by Gutenberg applied pressure by pushing a wooden platen against the paper on the inked type, and the pressure came from a screw. Gutenberg might have invented this, or he might not. There were possibly earlier presses that applied pressure with a platen that was weighted down with a large stone, which would have been a way to print woodcuts.

The inventions that have been attributed to Gutenberg include the screw type printing press, a new and improved ink based on the recently invented artists' oil paints, the intricate and complicated type mold, and movable type itself. But the fact is that all these things had to be invented to make printing practical. All of these but movable type could have been invented by Gutenberg, and the earlier movable type was not made to the exacting standards required for a press.

There were at least three other people who claimed to have invented the printing press, and at least one who credably claimed to have invented movable type. People of the time widely attributed the invention of printing to Gutenberg, but there is no record of what they meant by that.

The use of two-color printing began in the Song Dynasty (960 A.D-279 A.D). By the Yuan Dynasty, two color printing was used to print books, and it later became three and four-color printing. The color printing was invented in the Ming Dynasty, the first type of printing in the world.
