The last person promoted to the rank of 5-star General (General of the Army) was GEN Omar Bradley on Sept 22, 1950. It was a rank he held for the rest of his life and he was the last 5-star General to pass away.

He died on April 8, 1981.

Omar Bradley was the last officer promoted to that rank. Bradley had a fine career during WWII, but was not promoted to five stars until he was Chief of Staff during the Korean War, on September 22, 1950. This was done so he would not be outranked by one of his subordinate field commanders, MacArthur. Bradley was also the last living five star officer of any branch when he died, age 88, in 1981.

What would a 5 star General be called in the Marine Corps?

A 5 star general in the Marine Corps would be called an imposter because there is no such person. The generals in the USMC are Brigadier General ( 1 star ) Major General ( 2 star ) Lieutenant General ( 3 star ) and General ( 4 star ). There is no 5 star general in the USMC. The general who outranks a 4 star general is the Commandant of the Marine Corps but is himself a General ( 4 star ). He is outranked by the Secretary of the Navy and is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
