The last prisoner to be EXECUTED in the Tower of London was
Josef Jakobs, a sergeant of the German Army. The twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray, a notorious pair of London gangsters were there a few days in 1952 after the rather minor offence of failing to report for national service, and were the very last to be incarcerated in the Tower and only because it was at the time the barracks of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers London Regiment, the unit they had tried to avoid joining.

The last official prisoner in the Tower appears to have been Rudolf Hess, who had been Hitlers deputy and parachuted into Scotland on an unofficial bid to talk peace with Britain in 1941.
