The millionaire heir and real estate tycoon John Jacob Astor IV died when the Titanic sank. Another was Macy's co-owner and former US congressman Isidor Strauss. Also lost was Benjamin Guggenheim, one of seven sons of the late magnate Meyer Guggenheim.

Astor was famously included in a banner headline about the sinking. His pregnant second wife was with him but survived.
