Rutherford B. Hayes was chosen by a special electoral commission since initially neither candidate had the requisite 185 electoral votes. Although Hayes lost the popular vote to Democrat Samuel Samuel J. Tilden, he won an extra 20 twenty disputed votes when the House of Representatives voted to give them to him. It is generally believed that there was an unofficial compromise or agreement between the Republicans and Democrats in which the Democrats would acquiesce the victory to Hayes in exchange for the Republicans removing federal troops out of the southern states and, thereby, end Reconstruction.
No candidate won the majority of the electoral vote, so in accordance with the law, The House of Representatives chose the president and they elected Adams.
The US House of Representatives settled the 1824 election and chose the president in early 1825.
No. The Senate never chooses the President. The House of Representatives does, if the nobody win a majority in the electoral college. (See the related question.)
They run as a team and are both elected by the same electors who have pledged to support their candidacy. The only way they could not be from the same party would be if no candidate received a majority of the electoral vote so the House of Representatives chose the President and the Senate chose the Vice-President.

When nobody receives a majority of the votes of the electoral college, the House of Representatives elects the President, with each state casting one vote. So although Andrew Jackson had more popular votes and more electoral votes, since nobody had the 131-vote minimum, the election went to the House. Seven states voted for Jackson, but thirteen voted for John Quincy Adams (and three voted for William H. Crawford).
