Traian Basescu was the president of Romania in 2005. Basescu has had a troubled period in office since assuming the position on 20 December 2004. His post was suspended by parliament, but was returned to office by a popular vote on 23 May 2007 which voided any impeachment efforts. He was re-elected in 2009 for a final 5-year term.
