Were the disciples present at the crucifixion?John: They were, or one, at least (xix, 26).

According to the Synoptics, all were absent; all had forsaken their Master, all had fled. The Twelve Apostles at this time, unless Judas had already hung himself, as Matthew declares, numbered one traitor and eleven cowards.

What women followed Jesus and witnessed his execution?Matthew and Mark: Women of Galilee (Matt. xxvii, 55; Mark xv, 40, 41).

Luke: "Daughters of Jerusalem," that is, women of Judea (xxiii, 28).

Where were Mary Magdalene and her companions during the crucifixion?Matthew and Mark: "Looking on afar off" (Mark xv, 40; Matt. xxvii, 55, 56).

John: They "stood by the cross" (xix, 25).

Was Mary, the mother of Jesus, present?John: She was (xix, 25).

Synoptics: She was not.

  • The Synoptics do not expressly state that she was absent, but if she was present, as John affirms, is it possible that they would ignore the fact when they mention "the strolling Magdalene" no less than seven times?
Who stood by the cross with the mother of Jesus?John: "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Cleophas" (xix, 25).
  • Mary must have been a very popular name to be given to two daughters of the same family. It is not probable that these sisters were both named Mary. John never mentions the name of Jesus' mother, and it is evident that he did not suppose her name was Mary. Were John the only Gospel, Christians would be ignorant of the Virgin's name. Mariolatry did not originate in the Johannine church.
AnswerThe gospels mention a centurion and guards, presumably Roman, near Jesus. John adds that the two criminals who were crucified with Jesus were also still alive, as their legs were broken to hasten death. Mary Magdalene and another Mary, the mother of James and Joses (and, presumably, Jesus Himself), and a woman identified in one gospel as Salome (and in another as the mother of James & John, the sons of Zebedee), were watching "from a distance." Most of His disciples weren't nearby, for fear of being captured and tortured themselves.

Roman crucifixion was a public spectacle, so there could've been many people who came and went during the day.

AnswerJesus told the good thief hung next to him: "today you will be with me in paradise."

And Jesus did say once "my Father is always with me".

First of all, Jesus (peace be upon him) did not die, rather, he was raised up to God. When the Jews pursued him, God raised him up to him and to this day, he is in the second heaven. But, God put the likeness of Jesus (peace be upon him) onto another man. When the Jews crucified this man, they said, "We have killed Jesus, son of Mary!" but they did not. Close to the last days, Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend from heaven and establish peace on the earth. He will destroy the cross, kill the swine, and call people to the straight monothestic religion, Islam. Too hard to believe since most likely you yourself are still Christian? Well, in any case, he will tell the people that he (just a great MAN) is not God. He is not the son of God, he is not even the nephew or uncle of God. God is not his creation, just a wicked thing to believe so! But if God wanted a son, so be it! But far removed is He from what you associate with him. He is the Most High, The One, The Absolute. He is not man, he is the creater, and better than the heavens and the earth and what is in it. We humans cannot imagine how He looks like since he is so undescribable!!! What a gift, if one were able to enter Paradise, to be able to see what no eye has ever seen before! Just to let u know, I would be Jewish in the time before Jesus (peace be upon him), I would be Christian in the time before Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah (God) be upon him), but now God has perfected His religion with one that will not alter religious texts, or change any beliefs. So, when Jesus (peace be upon him) returns, he will follow the same Islam since Abraham (peace be upon him), and follow its rules then. Peace! =)

In Matthew 25:33, Mark 15:22, Luke 23:33 and John 19:17 its written as Calvary. Strong's word 2898 which is pronounced "kra-ne-on", some translate the word to skull. 'Kra-ne-on" is much like our medical term for that part of the human body that protects the brain "cranium" In John 19:17 its actually translated "the place of the skull"

The synoptic gospels are ambiguous about who was with Mary at the time of Jesus' death, but she seems to have watched from afar off. John's Gospel provides more certainty, having her at the foot of the cross with a disciple and several of the women:

In Matthew's Gospel, many women were watching from afar off, including Mary, mother of James and Joses. Since James and Joses were the brothers of Jesus, this Mary was also the mother of Jesus. Many women were with Mary, including Mary Magdalene and the mother of Zebedee's children (Matthew 27:55-56).

Mark's Gospel similarly says that there were women afar off, but some English translations call James, "James the Less," a term that could apply to the brother of Jesus but could also apply to another James. In this case, since he had a brother called Joses, he was probably the brother of Jesus and Mary was therefore the mother of Jesus. So, many women were with Mary, including Mary Magdalene and Salome (Mark 15:40).

In Luke's Gospel, the acqauintances of Jesus and the women who had come from Galilee watched from afar off. This appears to include Mary, who is here accompanied by Jesus' acquaintances as well as by the other women. (Luke 23:49)

In John's Gospel, Mary stood at the foot of the cross with her sister, also called Mary (the wife of Cleophas), Mary Magdalene and the 'disciple whom Jesus loved'. The disciple is never identified, but a second-century tradition is that he was the apostle John. (John 9:25-26)

Strictly speaking Jesus never had a funeral of any kind although He certainly was buried. The problem with any funeral was the fact that the sabbath was coming on -remembering that this began at sunset- and so there was no time at all except for a hasty burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. Women followers of Jesus planned to return after the sabbath (sunrise on the Sunday morning) and perform the normal rites of burial such as adding spices and ointments to his body. Their deed proved to be unnecessary since Jesus was no longer dead but alive.

If you refer to a funeral for Jesus in terms of who buried Him then Joseph of Arimathea obtained His body from Pilate (permission to bury it) and Nicodemus also attended. The women followed along so they would know where to come on Sunday.
