The French Revolution is the time famous for the guillotine - a big mechanical machine that was used to kill aristocrats and other supposed threats against the French peasants by decapitation. This is the same time period in which the famed queen Marie Antoinette was killed.

First, the bourgeoisie which was the 3rd estate. They were the only ones that had to pay taxes. The clergy and nobility (1st and 2nd estate) did not have to pay taxes at all, even though they were the richest.

Second, the nobility. Serious reforms were needed to try to prevent France from going bankrupt. Louis XVI wanted to take the urgent advice of his finance ministers and wanted to make the nobility pay taxes as well, so not all of the taxes had to be paid by the poor bourgeoisie, but they turned against him for even thinking of such a plan.
