Jean-Jacques Rousseau gave Jefferson the idea that a "well regulated militia as essential to liberty" and Charles de Secondat, baron de Montesquieu (known simply as "Montesquieu"), gave the Founding Fathers the concept of "the separation of powers" found in the US Constitution.
François Voltaire is perhaps the most famous of French philosophers from this time period. His witty writings on civil liberties advocated separation of church and state, free trade, and freedom of religion. Also important was Charles Montesquieu, whose theory of separation of powers is implemented in constitutions throughout the world. Francois Quesnay, a French economist and Denis Diderot, an Enlightenment writer, also contributed to the ideas of the French Revolution, just to name a few.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (28 June 1712 - 2 July 1778) was a major Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism. His political philosophy heavily influenced the French Revolution, as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought.
His Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and his On the Social Contract are cornerstones in modern political and social thought and make a strong case for democratic government and social empowerment.
Rousseau was also a successful composer and made important contributions to music as a theorist. During the period of the French Revolution, Rousseau was the most popular of the philosophes among members of the Jacobin Club. He was interred as a national hero in the Panthéon in Paris, in 1794, 16 years after his death.
