The Greeks were an ancient civilization of people who lived on the isle of Greece in the medditeranean sea. The Greeks were renowned for their arts and politics. They were the first civilization to form a democracy, voting for their leaders instead of having a long line of kings. At some point in time, the Romans,(from Italy) the strongest military wise civilization of their time, came along and conquered the Greeks, starting their huge empire. But when they conquered it, they liked the style of art, language, and politics of the Greeks. They then copied their art and culture and built the greatest empire ever built in that area. So when you read about the rennaciannse, the archetects who made those beautiful statues are from Italy, the descendants of the Romans. And the style and beauty of those statues comes from the Greeks. So Leonardo and Michaelangolo better thank the Greeks for all they have accompilished!

When people in the academy refer to the Greeks, they are thinking of the ancient Greeks who flourished during the classical period of greatness in Athens. When people refer to the Greeks in the context of philosophy, they are usually referring to Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. There were also important philosophers before Socrates and after Aristotle who might also be intended.
