The first followers of Abraham were from among those to whom Abraham spoke. In Ur and then Harran, and later in Canaan, Abraham spoke with people about the One God and His ways. This is what is meant by his "calling out in the name of God" (Genesis ch.12). Abraham considered it a pity that the idolaters would remain unaware of God, revering instead images of wood and stone. He taught anyone willing to listen (Rashi commentary, Genesis 12:5), and gradually built up a circle of loyal disciples (Genesis 14:14 and 17:23) including some Canaanite dignitaries (ibid 14:13), whose countrymen came to recognize that he was a man of God (ibid 23:6).

His disciples reached into the tens of thousands (Maimonides, Yad, Hilkhot Avodat Kochavim ch.2).
However, the only follower of Abraham to whom God made any promises was Isaac, Abraham's son, through whom Abraham's covenant would continue (Genesis 17:21 and 26:1-5). Any of Abraham's followers who remained with Isaac (and later Jacob) could eventually have their descendants part of the people of the Covenant; while those who drifted off to strike out on their own (such as Lot, Genesis ch.13) were, spiritually speaking, immediately lost to history.
