The four major candidates in the election of 1824 were

What is notable about this election is that even though Jackson won both the popular vote and the electoral votes, he did not win the election. The government was beginning to turn into a one-party government, so Congress chose John Quincy Adams. Adams and Clay later began the Whig party, and Jackson the Democrats.
