US Infantrymen in the Vietnam War were called "Grunts" because we grunted when we walked up and down hills, mountains, across streams, rivers, rice fields, and waist deep mud in the Mekong Delta. That particular mud looked and acted like CLAY. Up to two men would have to pull one man to get him un-stuck from that waist deep mud. For a machingunner, the M-60 machingun weighed 21 pounds, plus 200 or 300 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Plus canteens, C-rations (food), and hand grenades. Getting stuck in that mud with so much extra weight caused a LOT OF GRUNTING! US Infantrymen in WWII were called "Dog-Faces" probably because of their un-shaven faces and dog tags around their necks. US Infantrymen in WWI were called "Doughboys" probably because of the buttons sewn on their tunics, making them look like doughboys.
