'The Trap' by Kerima Polotan is my favorite short story. It was very well written and descriptive, dauntingly deep as well.
Basically, it's about a girl named Elisa who is suffering adolescence. She moves away from Tayug to Cabuyao and there suffers the principal's mockery, whom she hates. Her best friend Salud (who in my opinion is not very sympathetic to Elisa) writes her that Elisa will be the worst of all if she doesn't stop hating people. But Elisa likes someone--her Engish teacher Mr. Gabriel, a peculiar man who is calm but short and thin and stooped.
She falls in love with him, which partly had something to do with the fact that she becomes sick and does not recover for a long time. A classmate writes to her, and, absently, she answers with, "I am in love with Mr. Gabriel." Then the scandalous gossip begins, which threatens his job. Upon returning to school, Elisa said nothing and accepted suspension.
Elisa sees "Elisa Gabriel" written on the blackboard after school that day. She then leaves and takes the long way home, but as soon as she put her books down, she runs back all the way and stumbles into Mr. Gabriel's room. They surprised each other and she fell to her knees. In that position the words were wrung from her.
When she stood up and burst into tears, Mr. Gabriel approached her and led her to the door, telling her to run home.
The end! I recommend you read it, my summary (if it can even be called that) sucked..
