To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel author Harper Lee based on an event that occurred near her hometown in the mid-1930s, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. This was Harper Lee's first, and only, novel.

The book was filmed as a movie in 1962, was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three, including Best Actor for Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.

The Pulitzer Committee changed the category from "Novel" to "Fiction" in 1948.

There was no award for Fiction in 1971. Paul Zindel won the Pulitzer for Drama for his 1964 play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds, which is available in book format.
