Francisco Franco and the Falangists (Nationalists) won the Spanish Civil War.

Franco's troops defeated the Republicans and he and a cabinet chosen by himself ruled the country for almost 40 years. The military and the Church had great influence everywhere. This period is known as "La dictadura" and came to an end with the General's death in 1975 when King Juan Carlos I took over and democracy was adopted.

Most historians agree that during Franco's regime the country was extremely poor and way behind the rest of the world in many respects. Anyhow, even today some nostalgics disagree with the democratic system, so you see how complex Politics can get to be.

[Note: During the Spanish civil war Spanish Marxists self-proclaimed themselves as 'Republicans' (in name only) at that time. They were extreme left on the political spectrum and were aided in their cause financially and militarily by the then Marxist Soviet Union. This group was responsible for the burning of Churches, killing of religious leaders, imprisoning and torturing of non-Marxist leaders, and the attempt to create a Marxist State out of Spain. The Marxists were opposed by Spanish 'Nationalists' (traditional Spanish citizens) later led by General Francisco Franco who defeated Spanish Marxism at great financial and progressive cost to the country of Spain and its citizens. Historians are unanimous in that Spain is only now recovering from the damage done by Spanish Marxists in their attempt to overtake the country militarily]

A civil war is a war between two factions in the same country. The two factions that fought in the Spanish Civil War were the Spanish Republic and Nationalist Spain.

But it was not a "only civil" war, since Franco asked his fascist partner Hitler for help who sent the "Legion Condor". Picasso's "Guernica" is a direct result of the brutal way this "Legion" crushed the resistance.

And for Hitler is was a test of the rebuilt Nazi army, a precursor to World War II.

If you want to get a good impression of the Spanish Civil War you should read "Whom the bell tolls" by Ernest Hemingway...
