Jane Austen originally wrote 'Northanger Abbey' in 1798 and it was revised for press release in 1803.

It was not published by the first publisher who bought rights to it. It might possibly have been revised from a manuscript Jane Austen had retained in her possession, or after her rights were repurchased from that publisher during the last year of her life. It was released with Persuasion in 1818, after she died.

It was first published in the year 1813.

Jane Austen worked on Pride and Prejudice during the period of 1796-1812. When she began working on it, it had a working title of First Impressions. She reworked all her books, though we do not know how many times or when she revisited the book before it was published. A good deal of editing was done at the request of the publisher, in 1812. Since setting type and printing took a good deal of time in those days, and the book was published in January of 1813, we can probably be confident that she finished editing the manuscript in 1812.

There are many things we do not know about Jane Austen's life, and there is no record of precisely when she began to write. The general view seems to be she began when she was about twelve years old, about 1787.

She did not record a reason, but we can guess a good deal from the content of the book. She was experimenting with a new literary style. Her intent seems clearly to have been to produce a novel a person could recognize as structurally like Anne Radcliffe's Gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho, which is much talked of in Northanger Abbey, while giving it characters, settings, and events that might be in the lives of her readers. In doing this she was producing a kind of realism that was more fully, and less self consciously, developed in her later, more mature, novels.

Jane Austen started work on the first of her major novels in about 1795, and she worked nearly until she died in 1817. Her works portrayed the lives of people of her own time.
