I'm a psychiatrist, Ive read his suicide note and looked into his rough and rather depressing history. Kurt loved doing what he did, and he knew that he was rich, he loved his fans. He always would thank them, he knew he was special and was grateful that everyone loved him, but he was not interested in music anymore. He had no satisfaction in his career anymore.
"It doesnt affect me in the way in which it did for Freddy Mercury, who seemed to love and relish the adoration from the crowd." -Kurt Cobain
He felt the guilt that words couldn't imagine. He was reentering rehab after a horrible drug addiction, and had lots of stress on his shoulders. He loved his wife and child, but his hate grew towards humanity, due to the fact the only the people who have empathy get along.
Kurt Cobain didnt have the passion to do what he loved anymore, he didnt feel the excitement. He stated that it was the one real thing he was good at, and he didnt want to do it anymore.
He felt horrible for the people who loved him and wanted him to continue writing music, and killed himself so he wouldn't have to live through the agony of letting everyone who ever loved him down.
*I don't have a professional answer, but I do consider myself a devote fan. There were several factors. One that a lot of people tend to overlook is his constant stomach pains (which wasn't a major role, but was a role nonetheless.) Another was, in fact, Courtney Love. Many people don't believe this, but I do. She was bad for him, not only in the drug aspect but in that she would push him toward more fame (and in turn more... making his music"fit in" to get more money). He wanted a divorce before he died but she never let him leave. The main factor, I believe, was fame itself and the huge way it effected his whole world and thinking process. His whole life was about being different, and now he was the normal...he was the popular. That doesn't seem like any sort of reasonable cause for suicide to most people, but he felt VERY strongly about this. A mental state, really.
Because he had been struggling with depression most of his life. He had drug problems and a terrible stomach problem he described as unbearable that was never diagnosed. His physical pain probably caused his drug problems which only furthered his depression and pain. So he achieved "nirvana" (Hindu term release from suffering) a little ironic. I guess he just couldn't live with himself. Sad story. If it was, in fact, suicide, nobody will ever know the true reasons. However, there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that it was not suicide. See the link provided for further details.
