He doesn't, it is an extremely long normal coat. He wears red because Coca-Cola advertised him on there signs and bottles wearing red. They did this because red dye was normally expensive to use but they did it anyway and it caught people's attention and it stuck. I guess Santa liked it so he decided to wear or something.

Santa Wears red because Coca cola turned him that colour.He was oringinaly GREEN!!!!!!------The above is simply not true. It is a common misconception that Santa's colours were invented by Coke, but he was red before this and was originally painted this way by Thomas Nast, a Civil War cartoonist. Through out history Father Christmas has been depicted wearing a variety of colors. It wasn't until a 1930 Coca Cola ad that Father Christmas or Santa has been shown primarily wearing red.
