alternator is most likely too weak, not damaged, just not strong enough for that car.
If your engine is running , and the battery light comes on , that indicates that your battery is not being charged
12 volt system A fully charged 12 volt battery will have 12 to 12.7 volts. With you engine running you should have 13 to 13.5 volts
Maybe your alternator needs replacing.

Parasytic load of electrical system (clock, computer memories, etc.) wil drain a fully charged battery in 21 days. Starting problem: Bad fuel? Fuel system lost prime? With a fully charged battery try turning the key to "on" position without trying to start vehicle for 10 seconds. Do this twice and then try to start (may prime fuel system).
Disconnect the positive battery cable and charge it with a slow charger. Clean and reconnect the cable once the battery is fully charged.
It isprobably not getting fuel or not getting spark.

If the alternator is bad the car will still start. You just need a fully charged battery. Once running then you can check the charge rate from the battery with a volt meter.
