Edgar Allan Poe wrote many stories and Poems (the most popular 'The Raven.' He enjoyed writing and poetry with mayhem, macabre and 'the dark side' of life. All his life he had been depressed and as his future unfolded before him he drank, which made his depression greater and he became a threat at times with his behavior. He had periods in his life where he could be tender and loving and especially when he met and secretly wed his cousin Virginia September 22, 1835. She was 13 years old, but the marriage certificate read 21.

After five long years of Poe watching his young wife suffer from Tuberculosis (he would leave their home to go on many drinking bouts because of the stress), she died January 30, 1847. Poe was extremely unstable after his wife's death. He did court several other women: poetess, Mrs. Sarah Helen Whitman, Mrs. Charles Richmond, and the widow, Mrs. Sarah Elmira Shelton. None of the relationships worked out and he never remarried after his wife's death.

It is not known (Poe being an extremely private person) when he actually wrote the poem Annabel Lee, but it was written in the same house his wife died in New York. 'Annabel Lee' was published in 1949 (two days after his own death), and it is one of his most famous romantic poems.

Only Poe will ever know the true nature of his poem and many think that they have solved the riddle of this poem. They feel it was about a lover he once had, but most agree this poem is about his wife and he changed the name to keep his privacy and pain from public view.

When reading a poem, one should research the biography of the author, then slowly read the poem to seize what the poet is trying to say. Like a fine piece of modern art there are different thought patterns from each individual that views it and thus, 'Annabel Lee' is similar.

Poe was a natural at poetry from the time he was young and he led a tragic life, but, he wrote some fine pieces that make his work extremely popular not only in the U.S., but other countries and especially in France.

It is sad that Poe drifted through life and was a tortured soul driven to roaming the streets until his friend Dr. John E. Snodgrass found Poe (with someone elses clothing on) and entered him into the hospital on October 3, 1849. Poe died at 5 AM on October 7, 1849 and is buried in Baltimore, MD.

One only has to see the pattern of his lifestyle to get a glimpse into the mind of Poe's reasoning's for this poem. #1 Even back in the 1800s, 13 years old was very young and a large age gap between Poe and his young bride Virginia so there was no doubt problems with her family and much gossip by neighbours and critics of Poe's writings was inevitable. #2 He then had to watch his beloved young wife suffer from tuberculosis from 1842 until her death in 1847. #3 One can certainly see that his young wife died in 1847 and Poe mourned her loss; he turned to alcohol until he died in 1849.

The poem 'Annabel Lee' broken down is one angry Poe who blames the angels of being jealous of the love he and his young wife had and punished him by taking her from him. The last verse of the poem screams out how he was feeling by laying beside the tomb of his love and his bride by the sea. My own opinion is that Edgar Allan Poe was a 'dead man walking' and was trying to get the courage to try suicide again to join his wife. Instead, for reasons of his own he lived on until his own death.

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee; --

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea;

But we loved with a love that was more than love --

I and my Annabel Lee --

With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven

Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

My beautiful Annabel Lee;

So that her high-born kinsmen came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulchre,

In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me --

Yes! -- that was the reason (as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we --

Of many far wiser than we --

And neither the angels in heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling -- my darling -- my life and my bride,

In her sepulchre there by the sea --

In her tomb by the sounding sea.

One of favorite writers/poets and my favorite poem; I found this; doesn't give a definite answer - though we will never know. ... Annabel Lee" is the last complete poem[1] composed by American author Edgar Allan Poe. Like many of Poe's poems, it explores the theme of the death of a beautiful woman.[2] The narrator, who fell in love with Annabel Lee when they were young, has a love for her so strong that even angels are jealous. He retains his love for her even after her death. There has been debate over who, if anyone, was the inspiration for "Annabel Lee." Though many women have been suggested, Poe's wife Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe is one of the more credible candidates. Written in 1849, it was not published until shortly after Poe's death that same year.
