If it is your own animal, and you have a choice, take it to your vet. In a vet's office, it is done as humanely as possible, and you can be with the animal right to the end. At the shelters, it is not exactly done cruelly, but it is done much more "efficiently", and you cannot be with the animal until it slips away, at least at most shelters. It will cost you a few bucks more at the vets - it's worth it.

There is a long list of reasons, here are a few though.

1. There is no need to just kill a life of a dog for no reason.

2. Say animal control found your dog wandering, if it was euthanized, there is no way to get it back.

3. A lot of people want to save pets by adopting pets and lets say that you had been seriously thinking of adopting a dog and you didn't let them know soon, the dog could just be PTS.

4. There are already over 800 pets in the US alone that get euthanized every hour.

5. Most people will help at every chance they get so if they see a dog on the euthanasia list they will want to help save its life so why would someone want to be the one that would be euthanizing the dog.

6. Pretty much that no one wants to kill a dog for absolutely no reason at all.

because they don't get to run around like other dogs but it is very unlikely that they will die in their cages if they see them in pain they put them down (in other words put them asleep with medication).

The reason that animals are murdered at a shelters is usually due to the fact that people weren't buying the animal from the shelter and more animals were being rescued from elsewhere. Therefore the quantity of space at the shelter is minute, thus killing the animal to obtain more space and room for more animals. Sometimes it's because they aren't making money off of the animal and they believe that no one will buy the animal so they kill them to (again) obtain more space and room with out the other creature that they consider as undesirable and a waste or space. The amount of time that they'll keep the creature living In their building depends on the shelter some offer the time of a week, some a month and rarely 2 months; it ranges largely from days to a month and rarely more. In England though they do not kill the creature living in their shelters.

Because it's unfair and cruel. How would you like to be killed just because there's not room for you anymore?

Which animal shelters have a no kill animal policy?

In my opinion, yes. Animals should not be killed if they can't get adopted. Put it this way, if you were in a foster home and you couldn't get adopted, would you want to be killed? No, so why should the shelters kill the animals? Exactly, they shouldn't because that is called abuse. So final answer: All animal shelters should become no-kill animal shelters.

What are the bad things about animals shelters?

The list below names some bad things about animal shelters: 1. The animals have had a bad experience will people; they are likely to have a bad temper. 2. Most animal shelters will kill more than 90% of the animals they keep. 3. Some animal shelters may kill animals that they have kept for 7 or 14 days. 4. You never know what you are buying from an animal shelter, as you may have seen the animal only on a poster that people have made to look attractive. 5. Some animal shelters may not try their hardest to sell animals, and therefore kill most of them. 6. Some animal shelters may use a toxic gas to suffocate the animals that they want to kill (as opposed to euthanasia). 7. Not all animal shelters will accept every animal that is offered to them, therefore not doing their job of saving animals and rather killing them. 8. Some animal shelters will even kill very young animals (puppies, kittens, etc.). 9. You don't know where animals from animal shelters have come from. Most of the animals have been found on the streets. Remember that you should always buy dogs from breeders. It is exceptional to buy birds, reptiles, rabbits, and cats from pet stores, but you never know where a dog from a pet store came from (shelter, puppy mill, etc.). Remember that breeders are always the best! I hope this helps, and that people will find a good alternative to animal shelters!

What does an animal shelter get paid?

Only high kill shelters get real money :( Shelters only get money when they humanly euthanize animals. Makes NOOOOOOOOOOOOO sense at all. No kill shelters are run by donations. DO NOT support high kill shelters, puppy mills or pestores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are animals living in shelters in Canada being killed after a certain length of stay and if so by what method?

There are sadly tons and tons of shelters that humanely euthanize (Usually it is an injection into a vein) animals after a certain length of stay. There are so many animals that are going into shelters than there are being adopted. However there are also no kill shelters that will keep an animal as long as it takes to find it a home. If you have to bring an animal to a shelter please find out if it is a no kill shelter if it is find somewhere else that isn't.
