This is incorrect information. JW are not automatically disfellowshiped for celebrating Mother's Day, or Father's Day or celebrating anything else. The only time someone is disfellowshiped is if they commit a serious wrong doing, and DO NOT REPENT. (1 Corinthians 5:9-13). If and when they do repent, they are welcome back into the congregation. Disfellowship is never taken lightly, and is always a last resort. Regarding celebrating holidays including mom/fathers day there are a number of reasons why JW do not celebrate any holidays. Some of the reasons are that most of the holidays today are based on pagan beliefs, and also The Bible counsels Christians to be no part of the world.

I assume you mean why CAN'T Jehovah's Witnesses celebrate Mother's Day?

Mother's Day: "A festival derived from the custom of mother worship in ancient Greece. Formal mother worship, with ceremonies to Cybele, or Rhea, the Great Mother of the Gods, were performed on the Ides of March throughout Asia Minor."-Encyclopædia Britannica (1959), Volume 15, page 849.

Answer

Because, just like most JW theology, the belief in Mother's Day being 'pagan' is misinformed and confused and typical of an organisation founded on poor and heretical theology, and still staffed at the top with those who are ignorant of the theology, history, Biblical textual criticism and tradition of the Christian Church since the first cemtury. JWs miss out a lot in life not because it is 'bad' but because they simple abide by the rules that the Watchtower organisation make for them without question - and without even looking beyond the rules to ask what Jesuswould do in a particular situation. Ths, their lives are based more on rules than on love.

As even most schoolkids know, Mother's Day has absolutely nothing to do with 'pagan mother worship'. The whole idea is absurd. Mother's Day originated in the Christian Church as 'Mothering Sunday'. This was a day set aside (usually the fourth Sunday in Lent - three weeks before Easter) when mothers were especially remembered with love, and God thanked for the love that we received from our own mothers. Traditionally those in service (i.e. even the lowliest servants) were given Mothering Sunday off to visit their own mothers and to take them a gift with love.

This love of one's mother is very Biblical and reflects the love Jesus had for his own mother, Mary. As eldest son he would have had the responsibility for her care. Jesus' love was so great that he even made provision for her care as he hung dying on the Cross by ensuring that John - his most beloved disciple - took Mary into his own home after he had died (John 19: 26-27).

Mother's Day today has become commercialised to such an extent that it has lost its original Christian roots. However, you will find that most Christians across the world - especially in the UK - shun the commercialised 'Mother's Day' in favour for the original Mothering Sunday which they see as a real opportunity to publicly display their love for their mothers, or to remember, with gratitude, their mothers who are no longer with us but are in God's nearer presence.

JWs refuse to do this, preferring to hide behind the 'pagan' banner for all manner of things from Christmas to Easter, from birthdays to Mother's day/Motherihg Sunday, and yet are happy to carry on with other practices that have pagan roots (but of which they are unaware!). Most Christians find this not only sad but misguided and the cause of all manner of grief and sadness.
