Why are houses called houses, or cats called cats? You're basically asking what's the meaning of life. In all seriousness though, the origin of the name "Oreo" for Nabisco's cookie doesn't have a definite history, but there have been many proposed reasons as to why it would be named Oreo:

"Oreo comes from the Greek root for appetizing as in orexin or orexigenic (appetite stimulating) or anorexic (loss of appetite). There are many theories pointing to the origin of the name 'Oreo', including derivations from the French word 'Or', meaning gold (as early packaging was gold), or the Greek word 'Oros', meaning mountain or hill (as the original Oreo was mound shaped) or even the Greek word 'Oreo', meaning beautiful or nice.[5] Other theories are that the 're' from cream was 'sandwiched' between the two Os from cookie, or the word 'just seemed like a nice, melodic combination of sounds'. A TV spot for the Got Milk? campaign showed a false etymology where, when at a board meeting to decide the name of the cookie, one of the members is asked for his opinion; the member, who just ate a cookie and does not have any milk to wash it down responds "I don't know," which is heard by the board member as "Oreo." - From Wikipedia.com

Well, when Oreos were first made, they were not two chocolate cookies with cream in the middle. They were actually designed as a mound of cream and cookie. "Oreo" is actually Greek for hill. Because of the shape of this sweet treat, looking like a hill, it was given the name Oreo. They redesigned the shape of the treat, making it what we are familiar with. Yet, even though the format changed the name Oreo stuck. That is why Oreos are called Oreos!

Its ancient Greek for "round chocolate biscuit"

The National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) developed and produced the Oreo sandwich cookie in 1912 to compete with Sunshine's Hydrox cookie, which had been introduced in 1908.

Once upon a time... the Oreo creators were sitting around deciding what to call the cookie they had made. A plate of Oreos sat in the middle of the table. A man, no one knows who, was stuffing his mouth with them. Someone finally asked him what they should call it. He shrugged and said, "IDK" (but he said the actual words) with his mouth full. Everyone else heard him say, "Oreo." Thus, we get the name Oreo for this delicious popular brand of cookie.
