Best Answer

In the past diesel trucks where hard to start especially in cold weather, and diesels use very little fuel to idle so everybody left them run.

With modern diesels they start fine in all weather so there is no reason to let them idle.

as this is true, idling is still nesesary in some situations. big rigs idle to keep all the systems running inside the cab. starting and stoping an engine constantly is bad for it, so if in a situation where the engine would only be shut down for a few minutes, its better and easier just to leave it running.
