Best Answer

Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions. Various materials can make up stains on laundry, and enzymes can help break down protein, lipid, carbohydrate and starch based stains, so it's really versatile. Catalysts are not used up in chemical reactions; therefore, a small amount of enzymes are capable of doing a lot of work. Also, since they're proteins, they're basically safe, non-toxic and bio-degradable.

Why does laundry detergent itch?

If you have sensitive skin laundry detergent can make you itchy. Always rinse well after putting your hands in detergent solutions. When I used detergents to wash my underclothes I used to get itchy, because the detergents contained enzymes and seemed to make me itch. So I hunted for non-biological detergent and looked at the list of ingredients to make sure it does not include enzymes. This seems to have solved the problem for me.

Why are enzymes add to laundry detergent?

Enzymes can make a big difference in how effective a laundry detergent is, especially when removing stains from food grease, blood, ice cream, and so forth. Enzymes used in cleaners in general "break down" or decompose large molecules like proteins and fats, which may be part of the dirt you want removed from clothing.
