Not all apples are red. But of those that are, they contain anthocyanins , a chemical that may appear red.

Why might this chemical appear red? Because it absorbs all the light frequencies in the spectrum except red, which it reflects (like a mirror). So, when we look at a red apple, we see the color that the chemical reflects: red.
