The word 'apostle' comes from the Greek ἀπόστολος, meaning one who is sent forth as a messenger. The 12 apostles were sent forth by Jesus to bring the Gospel to all of Israel.

What is the collective name given to the 12 people that followed Jesus?

They are usually called the Apostles, but they are also referred to as the 12 Disciples. It's better to always include the 12 (with both Apostles and Disciples), both for clarity and also because Christ had many, many disciples.

Where are the acts of the disciples discussed in Bible?

The Acts of the Apostles describes what they did after Jesus ascended to heaven. They were then Apostles as witnesses to all that Jesus said and did, especially the resurrection. At this time disciples was also used as the name for all the Christian believers since they were all devoted followers of Jesus (no unbelieving nominalism then). Prior to Acts, the four Gospels, although centered on Jesus, record much of what the disciples (as they were then called) did and said.

Why are the 12 apostles called the 12 apostles?

Because this question is in the "Australia" section, it will be addressed as such. The 12 Apostles are a rock formation in the sea off the southern coast of Victoria. There are not twelve, but because they are in a scattered group, they were assigned a name that designated them as a common group, just as Jesus's apostles, or disciples, were a group "cut from the rock", so to speak. Apart from this, there is no particular reason for why they were given this name.
